Matthew K. Perez, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Matthew K. Perez joined the practice in 2007 after completing his training at Thomas Jefferson Medical University and Temple University Hospital, where he was chief ophthalmology resident. Dr. Perez also holds a doctoral degree in pharmacology from the University of Pennsylvania.
As a board-certified general ophthalmologist and refractive surgeon, Dr. Perez treats all eye conditions from vision problems, to cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic eye disease, as well as performing the most advanced laser and surgical procedures, including Advanced Intraocular Lens Replacement, Lasik and other types of refractive surgery. He cares for patients in the Egg Harbor Township, Ocean City and Margate offices.
John Patrick McLaughlin M.D.
John Patrick McLaughlin M.D. is a board certified ophthalmologist and joined Horizon Eye Care in 2019. He specializes in refractive surgery and has completed thousands of refractive surgeries, including LASIK/PRK and cataract extraction. He is happy to offer LASIK/PRK in our surgery center in Margate. He has advanced knowledge of specialty lenses designed to minimize the need for glasses after cataract surgery through the correction of presbyopia and astigmatism. He also has significant experience diagnosing and treating glaucoma and offers iStent implantation as well as SLT laser for lowering intraocular pressure. Dr. McLaughlin also offers blepharoplasty and pterygium excision.
Dr. McLaughlin is a native of Philadelphia. He became an ophthalmologist because he wanted to be a surgeon with the ability to impact lives. He earned his medical doctorate at George Washington University in Washington, DC. He then completed a medical internship at Mercy Catholic Medical Center and then served as Chief Resident at Krieger Eye Institute at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, MD. During his training he completed multiple research projects in the oncology department at Wills Eye Hospital, including publications on iris melanoma, retinoblastoma, and diabetic retinopathy. His experience in residency with ocular trauma and advanced pathology will continue the commitment of Horizon Eye Care to staying at the forefront of eye care in the Southern New Jersey Seashore area.
Dr. McLaughlin currently resides in Upper Township, NJ with his wife and five children and enjoys golf and the beach in his free time.
Sarah G. Bonaffini, D.O.
I joined Horizon Eye Care because it is a community based practice in a field where we have new technologies that impact lives daily through improvement and customization of vision. I love forming relationships with my patients and preserving and restoring vision is my passion. Although I specialize in cornea I also have a strong interest in cataract surgery and intraocular lens technology especially in patients with coexisting corneal disease, as well as secondary lens implantation. minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and injectable facial rejuvenation.
My corneal practice focuses on the surgical and medical treatment of cornea, anterior segment, and lens disorders. I specialize in corneal transplant surgery including full-thickness corneal transplantation, partial thickness endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK, DMEK), laser vision corrective surgery such as PRK as well as corneal collagen crosslinking for the treatment of keratoconus and post-LASIK ectasia. Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, trying new restaurants, and spending time with my husband and cat.
Dr. Bonaffini earned her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Pittsburgh majoring in Neuroscience with a minor in Chemistry and Classics and obtained her medical degree from LECOM Bradenton in Florida. After which, she completed her Ophthalmology residency in Philadelphia, PA at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine where she served as the Chief Resident and received much of her instruction from the world-renowned faculty of Wills Eye Hospital. She then completed a one year fellowship in Memphis, Tennessee at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Cornea Surgery and External Disease.
She is board certified in ophthalmology and is an accomplished author having published manuscripts in some of the top ophthalmology journals including the Journal of the American Medical Association in Ophthalmology (JAMA) and the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (JCRS). She is a member of many professional societies including the Cornea Society, Women in Ophthalmology, and the Refractive Surgery Alliance and has given lectures at various academic institutions and national meetings.

Dean N. Shissias, O.D.
Dr. Dean (as he likes to be called) joined Horizon Eye Care in 1999 after fifteen years of private practice throughout the area. He is an optometrist, providing general eye care with emphasis on contact lenses to the Horizon Eye Care patients in Margate, Galloway and English Creek. In addition to general optometric training, Dr Dean is licensed to prescribe therapeutic medications to his patients.
Dr. Shissias regularly volunteers his care to The New Jersey State Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired. He is an area resident who enjoys golfing and going to the beach.
Andrea J. Mazur, O.D.
Dr. Mazur is a primary care optometrist who joined Horizon Eye Care in 2001 after working for a medical practice outside Philadelphia. Dr. Mazur is a graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. She is committed to providing outstanding eye care for patients in the Egg Harbor Township and Ocean City locations. As a primary care optometrist, she helps patients with their glasses, contacts, and surgical options for Lasik and cataracts. She is therapeutically licensed to treat eye disease.
She and her husband have 2 young children and like to spend their leisure time with them. She also enjoys outdoor activities, reading, and traveling to visit family and friends.
Jill J. Rodio-Vivadelli, O.D.
Dr. Jill Rodio-Vivadelli completed a bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Psychology at The College of New Jersey. Her optometric studies were completed at the State University of New York College of Optometry in New York City, where she graduated second in her class with a Doctorate of Optometry in 2004. Dr. Vivadelli trained at Philadelphia Veteran’s Medical Center, Omni New Jersey Eye Specialists and SUNY Optometric Center. She was the recipient of various graduation awards and distinctions, including Esther J. Werner Memorial Award for Academic Excellence. Upon graduation, she completed a fellowship program in cornea and contact lenses in New York City, which provided advanced training in specialty contact lens fitting and refractive surgery.
Dr. Vivadelli currently resides in Hammonton with her husband, son and two daughters. When not in the office, she enjoys playing the piano, tennis, skiing, running, and relaxing at the beach with her family. She has been an active participant in the Multiple Sclerosis Walk for over ten years.
Lindsey Petsch, OD
Dr. Lindsey Petsch is a graduate of Widener University, where she received her Bachelor’s of Science in Biology and minor in Biochemistry. After Widener, Dr. Petsch attended Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University where she gained both knowledge and experience in managing and treating various eye conditions. She began her external clinical rotations here at Horizon Eye Care. She went on to rotate through the VA Medical Center in Wilkes Barre, Burlington County Eye Physicians in Willingboro, Pediatric and Binocular Vision Service at The Eye Institute in Philadelphia, and Eye and Sight Center in Voorhees.
A true beach girl at heart, Dr. Petsch is happy to be living at the Jersey Shore and enjoys trying new restaurants, country music, yoga, and spending time with her family.
Melissa Killion, O.D.
Dr. Killion is an insightful Optometrist who has a 21-year history of superior optometric service! She prescribes eyeglasses and contact lenses and provides patients with resources for ongoing care based on what she determines is their best course of treatment.
In addition, Dr. Killion is a long-time member of the Absecon Lions Club and has served as President for two years.
Kelley Sedlock, O.D.
Dr. Kelley Sedlock joined Horizon Eye Care in 2023. She grew up in western Pennsylvania, where she received her Bachelor’s degree from Saint Vincent College, and then went on to study optometry at The Ohio State University. There, she founded the Ocular Disease Club and received the Ocular Disease award for the Class of 2019. Dr. Sedlock went on to complete a residency specializing in Advanced Ocular Disease in Louisville, Kentucky where she worked for 3 years following graduation with a corneal specialist. She also earned her Fellowship with the American Academy of Optometry in 2021.
Dr. Sedlock loves being so close to the beach along with friends and family here in Southern Jersey
Michael Klufas, M.D.
He is an East Coast native, born and raised in Connecticut where his father has been practicing internal medicine for over 30 years. His wife, Samantha, and their new daughter, Katie, are excited to be returning to Samantha’s home state of New Jersey.
Dr. Klufas strongly believes the patient and the physician are a team working together toward a common goal and aims to deliver thoughtful and individualized patient care. He is also conversant in Ukrainian & Spanish.
Dr. Michael Klufas graduated Magna Cum Laude with Honors in Neuroscience from Brown University, and received his Doctor of Medicine degree with academic distinction and Honors in Research from Weill Cornell Medical College, New York, NY. Dr Klufas completed his transitional intern year at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY. He performed his ophthalmology residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell, New York, NY where he was awarded the Weill Cornell Resident Research Award and the New York Weill Cornell Medical Center Alumni Council Distinguished Housestaff Award. Dr Klufas completed his two-year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Jules Stein Eye Institute/University of California, Los Angeles, CA where he was recognized as the Thelma and William Brand Fellow & Abe Meyer Memorial Fellow, and received the Stein Eye Institute Fellow Teaching Award.
Dr. Klufas is Board Certified in Ophthalmology. He is an active member of the Retina Service at Wills Eye Hospital, and is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University.
David Xu, M.D.
Dr. Xu is dedicated to bringing his patients the latest evidence-based medical and surgical care. Dr. Xu has been an investigator for more than 20 nationwide clinical trials, including for age-related macular degeneration, geographic atrophy and diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Xu is board certified in Ophthalmology. He is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals, and is a member of the Retina Service at Wills Eye Hospital. He is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).
He graduated magma cum laude from Duke University and completed medical school with distinction in Biomedical Research at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, where he completed a research fellowship supported by the Research to Prevent Blindness fellowship. Dr. Xu completed his ophthalmology residency at the Stein Eye Institute, UCLA in Los Angeles, California where he won the Pepose-Saltzman Young Investigator Award and the Starr E. Schulman Fellowship Award. He pursued fellowship training at Wills Eye Hospital and stayed to join the Mid Atlantic Retina and Wills Eye Hospital faculty.
Howard J. Gross, M.D.

Certified as a Diplomat by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Howard Gross established Horizon Eye Care in 1994 and has since provided comprehensive eye care to patients of all ages, including the diagnosis and treatment of cataracts, glaucoma and diabetes. In addition to his over 20 years of practice experience, Dr. Gross is also a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and is a clinical research investigator for surgical product advancements seeking FDA approval.
He graduated from George Washington Medical School and completed his ophthalmology training at University of California, Davis. Dr. Gross served as an Emergency Room Director at Kirkland Air Force Base before beginning his practice in South Jersey. He has performed thousands of cataract surgeries and refractive procedures and was the first physician bringing LASIK to the area. In 2005, Dr. Gross took the lead in offering advanced multifocal lens implants, providing patients more alternatives for reducing their dependency on glasses and contact lenses.
Dr. Gross examines patients in the Margate, Galloway and Manahawkin offices and is proud to have constructed the area’s first nationally-accredited ambulatory eye surgery center to help patients achieve clear, healthy vision. He often says: “The greatest gift is when a patient comes back ecstatic with how well their vision has improved!” He spends his leisure time reading, golfing, biking, pursuing his love of aviation and most importantly spending time with his family.
